Your first chart reading: six steps through one messy chart

The chart below belongs to nobody in particular. It was built for this walkthrough, and built deliberately the way real charts turn up rather than the way textbook examples do. Nothing sits neatly in the sign it rules. Three of the four corners are empty. The rising sign says one thing and the planet ruling it says something close to the opposite. Working through a chart in a fixed order is what stops a reading from collapsing into a pile of disconnected facts, and the order used here is the one to keep using afterwards. The chart on the screen

Everything needed is in the list. Birth time 8.40 in the morning, house system Placidus, positions calculated from NASA ephemeris data the way any chart is.

• Ascendant. Gemini 14 degrees. Midheaven at Pisces 13 degrees.
• Sun. Taurus 6 degrees, twelfth house.
• Moon. Capricorn 19 degrees, eighth house.
• Mercury. Taurus 22 degrees, twelfth house.
• Venus. Gemini 24 degrees, first house.
• Mars. Cancer 18 degrees, second house.
• Jupiter. Libra 10 degrees retrograde, fifth house.
• Saturn. Aquarius 8 degrees, ninth house.
• Uranus. Capricorn 21 degrees and Neptune at Capricorn 20 degrees, both in the eighth house.
• Pluto. Scorpio 19 degrees retrograde, sixth house.

Read cold, that list says very little, which is normal. The order below turns it into something you could say out loud to the person it belongs to. Ascendant and its ruler, then the two lights, then element and modality balance, then the angular houses, then the major aspects reaching the Sun and Moon, and five sentences at the end.

Step one. The ascendant and its ruler

Gemini rising. What anyone meets first is quick, verbal, curious, a little restless, difficult to pin to one opinion in a first conversation. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, which makes Mercury the chart ruler, and where the chart ruler sits matters more than any single placement other than the Sun and Moon.

Mercury is at 22 degrees of Taurus in the twelfth house. That is a long way from the surface impression. Taurus slows Mercury right down, so the actual thinking is deliberate and takes its time arriving anywhere, and the twelfth is the most private house on the wheel. Someone leading with speed and chat has a mind that works slowly and mostly out of sight. That gap between the front and the machinery is not a contradiction waiting to be resolved. It is the first genuine piece of information in the reading, and anybody who knows this person well would recognise it straight away.

Two placements produced all of that. Ascendant plus chart ruler gets you the difference between how a person comes across and how they actually operate, which tends to be the thing they most want explained.

Step two. The Sun and the Moon

The Sun sits at 6 degrees of Taurus in the twelfth house, sharing both sign and house with Mercury. Taurus wants steadiness, physical comfort and a slow build. The twelfth house covers retreat, the unconscious and everything that happens away from public view. A Sun there often describes a person whose sense of self gets assembled in private, who needs a substantial amount of time alone before feeling like themselves, and who is easy to misread as absent when they are simply not performing.

Over in the eighth house, the Moon is at 19 degrees of Capricorn. Capricorn is the least sentimental sign the Moon can occupy. Emotional security comes from competence and self control rather than from being comforted, and there is usually a history somewhere of having been the capable one earlier than was reasonable. The eighth house channels that need into shared resources, intimacy and the subjects people avoid at dinner. Feelings here run deep and get managed rather than expressed.

Both lights are in earth, so the Sun and Moon agree about pace and substance. They also both landed in houses concerned with what stays hidden, the twelfth and the eighth, and a signal that repeats twice in the first two steps is one to keep hold of. This chart is doing most of its work where nobody can see it.

Steps three and four. Balance, and who is standing at the corners

Tally the elements across the ten planets and the ascendant. Earth takes five, the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Uranus and Neptune. Air takes four, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and the ascendant. Water takes two, Mars and Pluto. Fire takes nothing.

Strip out Uranus and Neptune, which everyone born in the same few years shares, and the personal picture comes to three earth, four air, one water. So the chart is less earthy than the raw count implies, although the two placements that matter most are both sitting in it. Having no fire at all is worth a note rather than an alarm. Enthusiasm and blunt self assertion will not arrive unprompted here, and this person will usually reach them through an argument that convinces them first, with air quietly doing a job fire would have done in another chart.

Modalities come out at five cardinal, four fixed and two mutable, so nothing dominates outright. Cardinal edging ahead through the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune suggests somebody who does in fact start things, which the Taurus Sun on its own would never have told you.

Now the angular houses. The first, fourth, seventh and tenth are the most visible positions in any chart, and this one has a single planet among them, Venus at 24 degrees of Gemini in the first. That is a real finding. Charm, sociability and an eye for pleasant surroundings are the most public thing about this person, and Venus there reinforces the Gemini ascendant instead of complicating it. The other three corners are empty, so you follow their rulers. The midheaven is Pisces, ruled by Neptune, which is at 20 degrees of Capricorn in the eighth, pulling the working life towards the private and psychologically loaded rather than the obvious. The descendant is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter at 10 degrees of Libra in the fifth and retrograde, so partnership is coloured by play, creativity and romance more than by duty. The fourth house cusp falls in Virgo, ruled by Mercury, which puts the story of home back in the twelfth house for the third time.

Step five. What actually reaches the lights

Only aspects inside orb count. Working from the tightest outwards, here is what touches the Sun and the Moon.

• Moon conjunct Neptune, 1 degree. With Uranus 2 degrees behind that. Three bodies grouped tightly in Capricorn in the eighth house.
• Moon opposite Mars, 1 degree. Mars at 18 degrees of Cancer in the second, directly facing the Moon at 19 degrees of Capricorn in the eighth.
• Moon sextile Pluto, exact. Pluto at 19 degrees of Scorpio in the sixth house.
• Sun square Saturn, 2 degrees and applying. Saturn at 8 degrees of Aquarius in the ninth house.

The Sun and Mercury share a sign and a house but sit 16 degrees apart, well outside orb, so they are not conjunct. Beginners read that as an aspect all the time because the two look adjacent on the wheel, and catching it is part of learning to read orbs rather than positions.

Content next. The Moon with Neptune and Uranus describes a nervous system taking in far more than it can account for, in a sign determined to keep a lid on it, in the house of other people's money and other people's crises. The opposition to Mars is the tightest hard aspect in the chart and it runs along the second and eighth houses, the axis of what is mine against what is ours. That tension is likely to surface around money and around who owes what to whom, rather than as generalised temper.

Sun square Saturn is applying, meaning it was still closing at the moment of birth, so it stays live rather than settled. Saturn in the ninth throws the pressure into beliefs, education and the large questions. The likely shape is a person who had to earn the right to their own convictions, who accepts nothing on somebody else's authority, and who is harder on themselves about it than the situation calls for. The sextile to Pluto is the one easy connection in the set, and like most sextiles it will sit there doing nothing until the person picks it up deliberately. In the sixth house that means the depth turns into an asset only once it gets attached to real work.

Step six. Five sentences, and the traps around them

The last step is a summary of five sentences, built on the themes that repeated rather than on any single placement. Here is the shape this chart came to.

This person reads as light and sociable and is not remotely light underneath. The private layer is where the real decisions get made, because the chart ruler and the ruler of the home both ended up hiding in the twelfth house. Underneath the quick Gemini surface the core is slow, durable and earthy, and it does not speed up for anybody. The recurring friction is about resources and control inside close relationships rather than about anger in general, which is the tight Moon and Mars opposition across the second and eighth. And the convictions were arrived at the hard way, which is the applying Sun square Saturn with Saturn in the ninth house.

Notice what did not happen in those five sentences. No placement got a memorised definition stapled to it. Nothing was graded as good or bad. Where two signals conflicted, and several did, both of them were kept, because a Gemini ascendant and a twelfth house Sun genuinely both happen in the same person, usually in different rooms and on different days.

A few traps catch nearly everybody at this stage. The biggest is building an entire personality out of one striking placement, and the eighth house Moon in this chart is precisely the kind of thing that invites it. Close behind is pasting a remembered definition onto a placement without testing it against anything else on the wheel. Then there is reading the chart as a verdict on how a life has to go, which is the one to resist hardest, since a chart describes tendencies and pressures and never outcomes.
