What is Mercury retrograde?

Mercury retrograde is the name astrologers gave to something Babylonian observers had already written down. A planet that appears, from where we stand, to slow down and walk back through the sky. No actual reversal takes place. It is a matter of perspective from a moving Earth, it happens 3 to 4 times a year on average, and each stretch lasts around 3 weeks. Moon Shine AI checks your chart and flags which areas deserve extra care in those weeks.

From clay tablets to epicycles

Babylonian astronomers kept records of planetary positions on clay tablets, night after night, for centuries. They noticed something about Mercury, and about the other planets visible to the naked eye. Each went through stretches where its progress through the zodiac slowed, reversed for a while, then picked up its normal direction again. There were no telescopes involved and no orbital mathematics. Just patient watching, written down and passed on.

Ptolemy tried to account for the pattern inside a geocentric model, with Earth fixed at the centre and everything else circling around it. Making the numbers behave required epicycles, small circles riding on larger circles, a wheel turning inside another wheel. The system predicted where a planet would appear reasonably well. The physical story behind it was wrong.

Copernicus supplied the correction and Kepler confirmed it. The Sun sits at the centre, not us. Mercury completes an orbit in 88 days while Earth takes 365, both travelling the same way around but at very different speeds. So there are stretches where Earth overtakes Mercury on the inside. From our window the slower planet then appears to slide backwards, much like a car you are passing on the motorway. No planet has ever reversed its orbit. The geometry of the viewpoint is doing all the work.

How often it happens and how long it lasts

Three periods a year is the usual count, with some years reaching four. Each one runs about 3 weeks. Added up, Mercury spends nearly a fifth of the year in retrograde motion. The dates move around and no fixed calendar repeats itself.

Astrologers also count a shadow. For roughly 2 weeks before the reversal begins, and another 2 weeks after it ends, the planet covers that same band of degrees again. The effect during those weeks tends to read as softer, more like an echo than the thing itself. Take 2022 as an example. Retrogrades fell in May, September and December, in three different signs, which means three different flavours. A reversal in Gemini or Virgo, the signs Mercury rules, tends to sharpen everything to do with talking and organising. One in a water sign is likelier to bring emotional misreadings than technical faults.

Twice per cycle the planet appears to stand still, once as it turns retrograde and once as it resumes direct motion. Much of the tradition treats those station days as the most sensitive stretch of the whole period.

Where it shows up in ordinary life

Mercury governs communication, thinking and the daily running of the mind. During the reversal you notice it mostly when one of those things misfires. An email that reaches the wrong person. Two appointments booked on top of each other. The laptop choosing that particular week to fail. None of this belongs exclusively to retrograde weeks. What changes is that people pay closer attention to such moments and then link them to the phenomenon afterwards.

On contracts, the classic advice is caution rather than prohibition. Reread every clause, don't skip the small print, which is worth doing in any week of the year. Travel works the same way. Flight delays, mislaid luggage and bookings that tie themselves in knots become a little more visible during these weeks. No statistics support the pattern. It is a repeated observation handed down over generations.

Technology sits in the same category. Installing a major update with no backup, or keeping one copy of a file you cannot afford to lose, is a risky habit in any season. Mercury retrograde works better as a reminder of that risk than as a cause of it. The planet has never deleted anyone's file.

Myth or reality? A bit of both

The relative motion of the planet is a real, measurable astronomical fact. What that motion means for a human life is interpretation, and everyone gets to decide how much weight to put on it. Popular culture has inflated the whole thing into a generic fear that everything is about to go wrong, which sits a long way from the moderation the classical material actually recommends.

Writers such as Schulman argue that these periods suit inner review better than launching something new into the world. The reading is about finishing what was left half done, picking up a conversation that stalled, tidying rather than inaugurating. Words beginning with "re" get their moment. Revise, reorganise, reconnect with someone from earlier in your life.

Someone born with Mercury already retrograde has a slightly different relationship to all of it. For them the transiting reversals tend to feel less foreign, because their mind runs on that rhythm by default. Knowing which sign and house your own Mercury occupies changes the whole experience of these weeks. It stops being an alarm and turns into a piece of timing you can use.

Selene

With a Mercury retrograde coming up, ask Selene in Moon Shine AI which houses and natal planets it crosses in your chart. That is what decides whether these weeks touch your work, your travel or your conversations.

Is it true that you should never sign anything during Mercury retrograde?

There is no strict prohibition. The traditional advice is to read every clause calmly before signing and not to rush the process, which is a habit worth keeping all year round. The retrograde simply brings it to the front of your mind.

What does it mean to have Mercury retrograde in my birth chart?

If Mercury was retrograde at the moment you were born, your way of thinking may lean more towards the reflective and the internal. Retrograde transits also tend to feel less disruptive to you than they do to other people.

Is the intensity the same throughout the period?

No. The days when the planet changes direction, at the start and at the end of the cycle, are considered the most sensitive. The weeks in the middle usually feel calmer.
