What is an opposition?

Two planets 180° apart, facing each other across the chart. That is an opposition. They sit at opposite ends of the circle, see each other perfectly and cannot occupy the same place, which is where the tension comes from. The mix-up worth clearing up first

Plenty of people file the opposition and the square together as the two difficult aspects, and lose the difference between them in the process. A square is friction that goes off inside a person. An opposition gets projected outward, onto another person or onto a concrete situation. That is why oppositions surface most visibly in partnerships, in business arrangements and in the particular people who keep crossing your path.

Conjunctions get confused with it for the opposite reason. Both are strong. Both work in reverse of each other. In a conjunction two planets share a point, blend and come out as one voice. In an opposition the two ends pull apart, and each speaks from its own sign and its own house. Fusion in the first case, two camps in the second.

An example makes it concrete. With the Sun in Aries and the Moon in Libra in exact opposition, the person wants to move alone and needs the bond at the same time. Both are true and neither sits still. When one gets its way, the other feels shortchanged. Learning to hold both ends at once is where the real growth in this aspect happens, and it usually takes years rather than months.

The six axes it runs on

Opposition is built into the structure of the zodiac wheel before any planet gets involved. Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. Six fixed axes, each dragging its own subject along. The Aries and Libra axis swings between the self and the pair. Taurus and Scorpio negotiates constantly between security and transformation.

When a planet forms an opposition on one of these axes, that subject tends to take up a large share of a life. Take Cancer and Capricorn with a Moon opposite Saturn. What comes out of it is a standing effort between family warmth and career discipline. Whenever one side gains ground, the other starts to look neglected.

Transits reactivate the same wiring. In early October 2020 Mars was retrograde in Aries and opposed planets sitting in Libra, and a great many people felt those degrees strongly. It was a stretch of swinging between irritation and the need to reach an agreement. A transiting opposition like that lands on the fixed opposition already in the natal chart, and an old subject lifts its head again.

Does it only cause trouble, or does it give something back?

Calling it a problem would be unfair to it. An opposition is first of all an instrument of awareness. The two ends watch each other and make demands on each other, and they also complete each other in the end. What they will not do is let either side be ignored quietly.

The difficult part is real too. People usually live one end of the aspect with much more intensity and project the other end onto everyone else. Someone with Venus opposite Pluto may not recognise their own jealousy and will instead report that they always seem to attract jealous people. Classic projection, and the way out of it is recognising both poles inside yourself. External tension drops noticeably once that happens.

There is a payoff on the other side. People with marked oppositions tend to have serious mileage in relationships, because they have spent their whole lives negotiating with the other. That produces empathy and real bargaining ability. In synastry charts the same aspect reads as strong attraction and as a genuine chance for two people to learn something from each other.
