What is the Part of Spirit?

The Part of Spirit is a calculated point and the companion of the Part of Fortune. In a day chart it is the Ascendant plus the Sun minus the Moon, and the night chart reverses the two lights. The quieter half of a pair

Most software prints the Part of Fortune and stops there, which leaves the system missing a piece. The Part of Spirit is that missing piece. Greek astrologers used the two together and called this one the Lot of Daimon. Fortune covered what happens to a person. Spirit covered what a person does about it. Read on its own the second one looks thin. Read against the first it starts to make sense. The pair was standard equipment for a Hellenistic astrologer rather than an optional extra. Printing one and hiding the other is a habit of software, not a judgment about the technique.

The pairing is not a metaphor invented later. It is built into the arithmetic. Both lots are calculated from the same three positions, the Ascendant, the Sun and the Moon, with the two lights exchanged. Because of that they sit at equal distances from the Ascendant in opposite directions. The relationship is structural rather than poetic. That is why reading one without the other loses half the picture. Whatever distance the Moon holds from the Sun, Fortune holds that same distance from the Ascendant in one direction and Spirit in the other.

The word spirit is worth a note of caution. It translates daimon, which in this context meant something closer to guiding character than to anything religious. Nothing supernatural is being claimed. The Greek term pointed at the part of a person that chooses, plans and pushes, as opposed to the part that receives whatever arrives. Later translators reached for the word spirit because English offered nothing better, and the choice has caused confusion ever since.

The formula and the reversal

In a day chart the Part of Spirit is Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon. In a night chart it is Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. Anyone who has read the Part of Fortune page will recognize those two lines with the roles swapped. That is exactly the point. The two lots trade formulas according to sect. Both use the same three positions, so the arithmetic itself is no harder. What changes is which light gets added and which gets subtracted.

Sect is decided by the Sun. Above the horizon at birth, in houses 7 through 12, gives a day chart. Below the horizon, in houses 1 through 6, gives a night chart. Get that wrong and you have calculated the other lot entirely. The mistake is common, because a fair amount of software applies only the day version and never asks about the Sun. If a program never mentions whether your chart is diurnal, that is a strong hint about what it is doing.

As with every lot, the Ascendant sits inside the formula, so a birth time is required. Without one the point cannot be calculated. A chart drawn for an unknown time has no rising degree to work from, and no amount of skill recovers it afterwards. Rectification is the only honest route in that situation. A time given to the nearest hour is not enough for a point you plan to read closely.

What the older material says about it

Hellenistic writers associated Spirit with the mind, with intention and with the actions a person chooses rather than the ones that arrive unasked. Fortune belonged to the Moon and to the body. Spirit belonged to the Sun and to deliberate purpose. The split follows the two lights and the roles the tradition handed them. That division ran through the whole system rather than sitting only in the lots.

Later texts extended the point toward career direction and toward the shape a person tries to give a life. That is a reasonable stretch of the older meaning without leaving it behind. It stays descriptive either way. Nothing in the tradition treats the Part of Spirit as a forecast of what a person will achieve. Career in this sense means the direction a person pushes in, not a job title or an income.

Modern practice has not settled on one use for the point, which is worth saying plainly. Some astrologers read it for vocation. Others keep it close to the original sense of intention and mental direction. Both readings sit inside the older material, so neither is a mistake. The point stays descriptive in either case, and that is the part that matters.

Reading it in practice

Start with the house. The Part of Spirit in the 9th house points somewhere different from the same lot in the 6th. Then take the sign, which describes the manner rather than the field. Aspects from the traditional planets add the last layer. None of this differs from how you would read any other calculated point in the chart. Give the house the most weight, since it names the field the point is working in. A tight aspect from a traditional planet is worth more than a wide one from anything else.

Then set it next to the Part of Fortune. The distance between the two says something about how far a person's chosen direction sits from their material circumstances. Close together, the pair tends to describe the same territory twice. Widely separated, they describe a life divided between what is chosen and what is given. That comparison is the main reason to calculate the point at all. Neither arrangement is better than the other. They simply describe different lives.

Keep the claims small. The Part of Spirit does not predict a career, an outcome or a date. It is descriptive, and it is one detail inside a chart that holds many. Astrologers who lean hard on a single lot usually end up saying more than the technique can support. Read as one voice among several, it holds up well.
