What is synastry?

Synastry is the method of comparing two birth charts by laying one over the other. Each person's planets land in the other person's houses, and specific angles form between the two sets, Venus to Mars, Sun to Moon and so on. Those contacts show where the relationship moves easily and where it asks for effort. The aim is never a single compatibility score. Is synastry the same as a compatibility test?

It isn't, and the two get confused constantly. A compatibility test, whether it runs on Sun signs alone or on an app that swallows two birth dates and returns a figure, is built to give you a closed answer. Compatible or not. Sixty percent. Eighty five. Synastry does something structurally different. It takes chart A in full, ten planets, twelve houses, every angle, and chart B in full, and crosses them point by point.

The gap between the two is one of kind rather than degree. A compatibility test starts from a fixed table where sign X and sign Y always produce the same verdict, no matter who A and B actually are. A synastry cannot repeat itself, because it depends on where every planet stood at each person's exact moment of birth. Two couples who both pair a Leo Sun with an Aquarius Sun can end up with readings that share almost nothing.

Everything turns on where their Venus, Mars and rising degrees fall. That doesn't make the compatibility quiz worthless, it just makes it a party game most of the time. Synastry sets out to describe a live dynamic between two specific charts instead of filing two people into a generic grid.

What happens when the two charts overlap

The procedure itself is simple enough, even when the result isn't. You take the exact degrees of A's planets and place them as a layer around B's chart, or the other way round, since the order changes nothing. Then you look at the angles between the two sets. Whether A's Venus trines or squares B's Mars. Which house of B receives A's Moon. Each question gets answered on its own, without hurrying to a verdict.

One distinction gets missed a lot. A Venus square Mars inside your own birth chart is part of your structure and it stays with you for life. The same angle in synastry only switches on when those two particular people are in contact. Alone, you would never notice it. It shows up in the conversation, in the shared room, in the small daily friction. That is why synastry counts as a separate layer rather than an extension of the individual reading.

House overlays add another dimension. When A's planets fall into B's house 7, the partnership theme gets reinforced. When they fall into house 10, what lights up has more to do with career and a shared public life.

Why Venus-Mars and Sun-Moon get all the attention

Because those two contacts hold much of the pulse of a relationship. Venus to Mars speaks about attraction and desire. If A's Venus trines or sextiles B's Mars, attraction tends to move without much resistance. If the angle is a square or an opposition, the attraction is still there, sometimes more forcefully, but it arrives mixed with friction. Squares and oppositions turn up in every synastry ever drawn, and plenty of long relationships hold together because of that friction rather than in spite of it. Tension is not a synonym for breakup. If Saturn in one chart squares the Sun in the other, the relationship can feel weighty at times, loaded with obligation, while also supplying continuity and seriousness that not every couple manages to sustain.

What counts is the whole sum rather than one angle in isolation. Five harmonious contacts sitting alongside two tense ones make a different picture from two harmonious ones next to five tense ones. Fixing on the most dramatic aspect and ignoring the rest is a reading error, not a finding. Conjunctions deserve their own note here. When a planet of A lands right on a planet of B, that theme gets amplified in the relationship, sometimes past the point of comfort, and amplification is neither good nor bad by itself.

All of which is why a single percentage falls short. More than thirty pairings of planets and points exist between two people, each forming its own angle and landing in its own house.
