House overlays: why the same person feels different to two friends

Why does one person land so differently on two friends who both know him well? The first finds him energising and slightly public, someone who pulls her into rooms she would never have walked into alone. The second finds the same man domestic and easy to be quiet with, familiar from about the third week. Nothing about him changed between the two accounts. What changed is where his planets fall in each of their house systems, which is the layer synastry calls the overlay. His Sun might sit near the first friend's eleventh cusp and near the second friend's fourth. Whose houses are being used

An overlay is built by taking one person's planets and placing them on the other person's house cusps, ignoring that person's own planets for the moment. His Sun at 22 degrees of Capricorn goes wherever 22 degrees of Capricorn falls in her chart. If her seventh house runs from 18 Capricorn to 15 Aquarius, his Sun is in her seventh, and that is a statement about her life.

The direction is the whole point. A house overlay describes what the house owner experiences, not what the planet owner intends. When she says that his Sun is in her seventh, she is reporting that being around him puts her in a partnership frame of mind, that she thinks of him in terms of one to one relating whether or not that is what they have. He may be nowhere near that frame himself. Reverse the whole exercise, dropping her planets into his houses, and you get a completely different set of statements about a completely different set of subjects.

One technical dependency comes with this. Houses are drawn by a house system, and near a cusp the choice of system moves a planet from one house to the next. A planet at 16 Aquarius could be in her seventh under one system and her eighth under another. Check which system the chart was built with before you commit to an overlay reading that sits within a couple of degrees of a boundary.

The houses that come up most often

Any of the twelve can receive an overlay, but a handful account for most of what people notice.

Planets landing in the first house are felt immediately and physically. The house owner tends to describe recognition, or a sense of being seen accurately before any real information has been exchanged. Venus there is flattering. Saturn there can feel like being assessed. The fourth house produces something quieter and slower, a sense of the other person belonging to the private end of life, and it turns up often in long domestic partnerships and in family comparisons where nobody chose the arrangement.

The seventh is the partnership house, and its behaviour is oddly literal. The receiver tends to file the other person under partner regardless of what the relationship actually is, which is why seventh house overlays show up between business co-founders and between friendships that lasted thirty years, not only in couples. Eighth house overlays bring intensity, shared resources, and the material two people discuss with each other and nobody else. That is not a warning, whatever the older literature suggests. It is a description of depth and of exposure.

The twelfth is the ambiguous one. Familiarity with no obvious cause, difficulty seeing the person clearly, a connection that occupies more of the receiver's inner life than of their calendar. The remaining houses do their own jobs. Fifth house overlays run to play and creative output, tenth house overlays attach the person to status and public standing, second house overlays touch money, values and a certain steadiness, and eleventh house overlays place someone inside the shared circle rather than opposite you.

Everything here depends on the birth time

An overlay is only as good as the receiver's birth data, and the tolerance is narrow. House cusps move roughly a degree every four minutes, and the Ascendant changes sign about every two hours, which drags all twelve cusps along with it. A birth time that is off by ninety minutes can relocate half the overlay.

The rule that follows is the same one the first module set out. If the receiver's time is unknown, no overlay claim is made, and saying so is better than producing a reading that quietly assumes a time nobody verified. The aspect layer between the two charts is still fully available, so you are not left with nothing.

Rounded times sit in between. If a planet lands in the middle of a house, eight or ten degrees clear of either cusp, it will survive an hour of uncertainty and you can read it. If it lands one degree past a cusp, it will not, and the honest move is to note both possibilities or to leave that placement out. Since the overlay is the layer most beginners find most vivid, it is also the one where an unverified birth time does the most damage to a reading.

Reading the overlay next to the aspects

The two layers answer separate things. An interaspect tells you how two planetary functions interact, and the overlay tells you which department of life is hosting that interaction. Used together they get specific in a way neither manages alone.

When they agree, the reading firms up. His Venus in her fifth house, and his Venus also trine her Moon, says something coherent about enjoyment, creative company and emotional ease all sitting in the same part of her life. When they disagree, resist the urge to pick a winner. His Saturn in her seventh house while his Saturn squares her Sun gives you structure and obligation entering her partnership area at the same time as pressure landing on her sense of self. Both are true. A reading that reports only the flattering half is not a shorter reading, it is a wrong one.

There is also a difference in tempo between the layers that is easy to miss. A tight interaspect tends to be noticed early, often in the first few meetings, because it operates whenever the two people are in contact. An overlay reveals itself more slowly, as the relationship starts occupying a recognisable slot in one person's life. Somebody with a fourth house overlay may take a year to realise that this friend now belongs to the private end of their life rather than the social one, and that realisation arrives as a fact about their own arrangements rather than as a feeling about the other person.

An overlay with no aspect support is the weaker case. A planet sitting in someone's eighth house while making no close contact to anything in their chart is worth a line, not a paragraph. The overlay says where the potential sits. The aspects say whether anything is switched on there.

A worked pair, and the limits

Take the two friends from the opening. Her chart has an eleventh house running from 14 Capricorn to 20 Aquarius, so his Sun at 22 Capricorn falls inside it, and her account of him is social, collective, tied to groups and plans and people she met through him. The other friend has a fourth house covering 19 Capricorn to 24 Aquarius. The same Sun, the same degree, lands in her private life instead, and her account is of someone who feels like family. Neither woman is wrong and neither is describing him accurately, because neither is describing him at all. Each is describing what he activates in her chart.

Two limits are worth stating before you use this. Nearly all published overlay descriptions were written for romantic couples, so applying them to a sibling, a colleague or a parent requires translating first. A fifth house overlay between two coworkers is not a flirtation, it is usually the pair who end up doing the creative work together. And an overlay names an area of life, never an outcome inside it. A seventh house overlay does not forecast a marriage, an eighth house overlay does not forecast a crisis, and no combination of houses identifies a person you are destined to meet.
