Seven degrees from the Sun a planet is burned. Seventeen minutes of arc from the Sun the same planet is cazimi, in the heart of the Sun, and the tradition calls it the strongest place a planet can stand. That reversal inside half a degree is the strangest thing in the whole doctrine of solar nearness, and it turns out to rest on a physical measurement rather than on a poetic one.
Seventeen minutes is the size of the Sun
The Sun's disk covers a little under half a degree of sky. Its apparent diameter runs from about 31.5 minutes of arc when Earth is furthest away to about 32.5 minutes when we are closest, so the radius is close to sixteen minutes. The traditional cazimi boundary of seventeen minutes is that radius, rounded up a shade. A planet inside it is not merely near the Sun. Measured along the ecliptic it is inside the solar disk.
That is why the older writers describe the planet as being in the Sun's chariot or seated with the king rather than standing in his glare. The distinction is literal. Everything from seventeen minutes out to eight degrees is in front of the light and washed out by it. Everything inside seventeen minutes is on the disk itself. One measurement produces both the worst condition in the tradition and the best.
There is a technical honesty problem worth naming. Nearly all software checks longitude only, and a planet can share the Sun's degree of longitude while sitting a degree or more north or south in latitude, which means it passes above or below the disk rather than across it. Real transits across the Sun's face are rare: Mercury manages it around thirteen times a century, and Venus does it in pairs eight years apart with more than a century between pairs. Two schools, and a five point swing
Not everyone uses seventeen minutes. A second tradition allows a full degree either side of the exact conjunction, and that choice changes the practical picture completely. Seventeen minutes gives a window measured in hours for a fast planet. A whole degree can stretch it across most of a day. Both figures appear in reputable sources, so the useful move is to say which one you are using rather than to argue that the other is wrong.
The term reached European astrology through Arabic transmission, and Latin writers rendered the phrase for being in the heart of the Sun as cazimi. Bonatti keeps it in the thirteenth century and Lilly keeps it in the seventeenth. In Lilly's scoring table cazimi is worth five points while combustion costs five, which puts a ten point swing across a gap of roughly seven and a half degrees. No other condition in that table changes value so sharply over so short a distance.
Modern practice inherited the reversal without inheriting much explanation for it. The reading most working astrologers land on is that the planet stops competing with the Sun and starts speaking as it. Whatever that planet governs is fused with identity and purpose so completely that the two cannot be separated out. That is a description of a condition, not a promise about results, and the tradition never claimed it made anything turn out well.
How often it actually happens
Mercury meets the Sun roughly six times a year. Three of those are inferior conjunctions falling in the middle of a retrograde period, with Mercury between us and the Sun, and three are superior conjunctions with Mercury moving direct on the far side. The retrograde version is the one the modern revival talks about most, partly because it lands in the middle of a stretch people are already watching.
Venus is slower to come around. Its synodic cycle runs about 584 days, so each type of conjunction arrives roughly every nineteen months. Mars manages one every twenty six months or so, Jupiter about every thirteen months, Saturn a little over twelve. The outer planets each get one pass a year and the exact window inside seventeen minutes lasts hours, not days.
Because the window is that narrow, a natal cazimi is genuinely uncommon. Most charts that look like one at first glance turn out to be an ordinary Sun conjunction of two or three degrees, which is combustion rather than its opposite. Checking the actual gap in minutes rather than accepting a rounded degree display is the whole test, and it is worth doing before building any reading on the claim.
Using it without overselling it
Electional astrologers sometimes choose a Mercury cazimi hour for launching something that depends on being clearly understood, on the reasoning that a Mercury speaking with the Sun's authority is Mercury at its most concentrated. That is a traditional preference with a long pedigree behind it. It is not evidence, and it is worth holding it as a considered choice rather than as a guarantee about how the thing will go.
Taken as a transit, cazimi is best read as a brief clearing rather than an event. Whatever the planet governs may come into unusually sharp focus for a few hours, and people who track their own charts closely often report noticing it. Others notice nothing, which is the ordinary situation with any short window, and neither response settles anything about the technique.
The honest summary is that cazimi describes an extreme of closeness with an unusual reading attached. It marks intensity and fusion on the axis of whichever planet is involved. It does not indicate which way anything develops, and no traditional source claimed it did.
