What does combust mean in astrology?
Within roughly eight degrees of the Sun a planet is called combust, and the older texts read that closeness as a loss of the planet's own voice. The image is not decorative. A body that near the Sun disappears from the sky entirely, rising and setting inside daylight where nobody can see it, and the vocabulary of burning grew out of that plain observational fact rather than out of metaphor.

Traditional astrology does not treat nearness to the Sun as one condition. It grades it. Inside about seventeen minutes of arc a planet is cazimi, in the heart of the Sun, and the tradition reads that as the strongest position available. Out to roughly eight degrees, eight and a half in Lilly's tables, the planet is combust. Beyond that and out to somewhere between fifteen and seventeen degrees it sits under the beams, dimmed rather than consumed. Past that line it is free.
The outer boundary is the interesting one, because it is not an astrological invention. It marks heliacal visibility, the point at which a planet emerges from the Sun's glare and can be spotted low on the horizon just before sunrise or just after sunset. Babylonian and later Hellenistic astronomers tracked those first and last appearances with real precision, since a planet's heliacal rising was a dated, checkable event rather than an interpretation. The astrological categories inherited the astronomy.
That origin explains why the numbers are approximate and why they vary a little by planet. Mercury is faint and needs more separation from the Sun before it becomes visible than Venus does, and Venus at its brightest can occasionally be picked out surprisingly close in. The tradition rounded these into one usable figure. Modern practice mostly keeps the round figure and remembers where it came from.
Which planets it happens to, and how often
Mercury never wanders more than about 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than about 47, which is a consequence of both orbiting closer to the Sun than we do. Those ceilings mean the two inner planets spend a substantial share of every year inside the beams, and Mercury in particular is combust often enough that treating it as a rare affliction misreads the sky badly.
The planets outside our orbit behave differently. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn only become combust once per synodic cycle, when the Sun passes between us and them. For Jupiter that is roughly every thirteen months, for Saturn a little over twelve, and for Mars only once in about twenty six months. Each of those passages puts the planet out of sight for a stretch of weeks before it climbs back into the dawn sky.
The Moon is combust in the days on either side of a New Moon, which is simply another way of describing the same conjunction, and it recurs on the familiar cycle of about 29 and a half days. The Sun is never combust. It is the body doing the burning, and no condition of that kind applies to it.
What the tradition claimed, and what practice keeps
Classical astrology counted combustion among the accidental debilities, the conditions that weaken a planet regardless of what sign it occupies. Lilly's scoring table takes five points away for it, among the heaviest penalties in that column, and the standard image was of a planet held prisoner or stripped of its ability to act on its own behalf. Read literally, that verdict would condemn a large fraction of all charts, since Mercury alone spends a sizeable part of every year inside the burned zone.
Modern practice keeps the measurement and softens the sentence. The more useful reading is fusion rather than damage. A planet joined that tightly to the Sun stops operating as a separate voice and starts operating as an instrument of identity and purpose. A combust Mercury is not a poor thinker. It tends to describe a mind that argues from conviction rather than from a distance, persuasive on its own subject and less inclined to hold an opinion at arm's length. A combust Venus often points to affections wound into a sense of self rather than held apart from it.
One further distinction is worth carrying. A planet that rises before the Sun appears as a morning star, and a planet that trails it into the evening sky is an evening star. Traditional sources called these oriental and occidental and read them as genuinely different conditions, with the morning position generally treated as the more forward and independent of the two. The gap is the same size in both cases. Which side of the Sun it falls on changes the tone.
Reading it without the doom
Combustion is one factor among several and not a verdict on its own. A combust Mercury in its own sign of Gemini or Virgo is in a very different state from a combust Mercury in Pisces, and the house it falls in decides where the theme plays out at all. Checking dignity, house and aspect before reaching a conclusion is the difference between a reading and a label.
As a transit it is temporary and easy to date. Mercury passes through combustion several times a year, and its exact conjunction with the Sun in the middle of a retrograde period is also the cazimi moment, which the tradition rates as the opposite of a weakness. The two conditions sit on the same axis a few degrees apart, so they belong together in any honest account rather than being taken separately.
None of this predicts an outcome. It describes an axis of pressure, how tightly a planet is bound to solar purpose, and how visible that planet is in a life. What a person does with that is not written into the geometry, and any source that tells you otherwise is adding something the measurement does not contain.
