What is actually happening in the sky?
Twice a month the Sun and Moon reach an angle that the whole lunar tradition rests on. At 0° they sit in the same degree, and that is the New Moon. At 180° they stand across the wheel from each other, and that is the Full Moon. The Moon itself does not change. What changes is where it sits relative to the Sun from where we happen to be standing.
