What is the progressed Moon?

Inside a secondary progression, where each day after birth stands for one year of living, the Moon is the body that moves fast enough to be worth watching. It covers the whole zodiac in a little over twenty seven years, which works out at roughly one degree for every month you have been alive. Astrologers read it as the emotional climate of a stretch of a few years at a time, and as the part of life your attention has quietly moved toward.

Where the twenty seven year cycle comes from

The number is not chosen, it is inherited from the sky. The Moon returns to the same zodiacal degree every 27.32 days, which astronomers call the sidereal month. Feed that through the day for a year scale and those days become years, so the progressed Moon takes about 27.3 years to return to the degree it held at birth. Divide by twelve and you get an average of a little under two and a third years in each sign.

That return has a name and a place in most people's biographies. The progressed lunar return arrives somewhere around twenty seven, comes back near fifty five and again near eighty two. It sits close enough to the first Saturn return at roughly twenty nine and a half that the late twenties carry two slow cycles closing within a couple of years of one another, which is one honest reason that stretch of life gets described as a reorientation so consistently.

The average hides a real variation. The Moon does not travel at a constant rate, since its orbit is elliptical, and its daily motion swings between about eleven degrees fifty minutes and fifteen degrees twenty minutes. Under progression that becomes years rather than hours. A sign entered while the progressed Moon is running fast can be crossed in under two years, and a slow stretch can hold it for closer to two and three quarters. Sign, house and phase describe three different things

How its contacts actually behave

At about one degree per month of life, the progressed Moon crosses a natal planet reasonably quickly. Allow a one degree orb on each side and the contact is roughly a two month window, which is short enough to notice and short enough to miss. That is the opposite of an outer planet transit, where the same aspect can stay live for the better part of a year, and the two should not be weighted the same way.

Ingresses look like clean lines on paper and rarely feel like one. The last few months of a sign and the first few of the next usually blur into each other, because a progressed placement is a continuous motion and not a switch that flips on a date. Expecting a mood to change on the day the software says the sign changed is the most common way to be disappointed by this technique.

The honest reading stays with climate rather than events. A progressed Moon in the tenth house says attention is likely to gather around work, standing and what you are building in public, and it says the emotional weather of that stretch has a certain quality.
