Eight steps around one circle

Astrology counts eight phases and the count is not arbitrary. Each one covers 45 degrees of the growing angle between the Sun and the Moon. New Moon opens at zero. Then comes the waxing crescent, the first quarter at 90 degrees, the waxing gibbous, and the full Moon at 180. The second half runs back down through the waning gibbous, the last quarter at 270 and the waning crescent. Then the cycle starts again. Eight names, one circle, no gaps anywhere in it. Nothing is skipped.

The whole round takes 29.53 days on average, which astronomers call the synodic month. Divide that by eight and each phase lasts a touch under four days. The word average is doing real work in that sentence. The orbit of the Moon is an ellipse rather than a circle, so the actual figure drifts by several hours from one month to the next. Published tables come from measured positions, not from dividing a number by eight. One point causes constant confusion, so it is worth stating plainly. The 29.53 day cycle is not the time the Moon takes to orbit Earth. That orbit, measured against the fixed stars, takes 27.32 days and is called the sidereal month. The extra two days exist because Earth keeps moving around the Sun while the Moon circles us. The Moon has to catch up before the Sun and Moon line up again. Two different numbers, two different questions. Mixing them causes real errors.

Where the light actually comes from

The Moon makes no light of its own. Half of it is always lit by the Sun, without exception, in every phase of every month. What changes is how much of that lit half is turned towards us. At the new Moon the dark side faces Earth, because the Moon sits roughly between us and the Sun. At the full Moon the arrangement flips and we get the whole lit face. Everything in between is a matter of viewing angle. The illuminated half stays constant, and the only real variable is where we happen to be standing.

A very common belief holds that the shadow of Earth carves the crescent. It does not.
