What is a semi-square?
A semi-square is the 45 degree angle, exactly half of a square. It is minor by weight and hard by character, which is an unusual combination and the reason it gets read as persistent low grade friction rather than as a confrontation. Halve the circle three times and you arrive at 45
Start with the full 360. Half of it is the opposition at 180. Half again is the square at 90. Halve it once more and you have the semi-square at 45. Every angle in that chain belongs to what modern writers call the eighth harmonic, since 45 divides into 360 exactly eight times, and the family shares one temperament. These are the angles of pressure. Nothing produced by repeated halving is comfortable, and the further down the chain you go the smaller the scale of the pressure and the tighter the measurement has to be.
The alternative name is octile, from the eighth part of the circle, and some software still labels it semiquadrate. One step further out on the same series sits the 135 degree sesquiquadrate, which is one square plus one semi-square. Between them the two minor octiles fill in the stretches that the square leaves empty, so a chart read with the whole series shows hard contacts at 45 degree intervals right around the wheel instead of only at the quarters.
What that does to sign relationships is the reverse of what the classical hard aspects do. A square always joins signs of the same modality, which gives it a story before you have looked at anything else. Forty five degrees is not a whole number of signs at all, so the aspect lands mid sign and connects whatever happens to be sitting there. A semi-square carries no sign level logic to fall back on, and everything it says has to come from the two planets and the measured gap.
Kepler put it on the list, with a geometric argument
The 45 degree angle enters the record with Johannes Kepler. In Harmonices Mundi, published in 1619, he rebuilt aspect theory on a different footing from Ptolemy's. Rather than asking which signs are able to behold one another, he asked which regular figures can be inscribed inside a circle, and treated the angles those figures generate as the ones that carry effect. It is an argument from proportion rather than from inherited authority, and he said so plainly.
The octagon yields 45 degrees. The pentagon yields 72, which is the quintile, and 144, the biquintile. Kepler kept the classical five aspects and added these, and the 135 degree sesquiquadrate came in on the same reasoning. Those additions are still described collectively as the Keplerian aspects, which is a useful reminder that they arrived together and from a single line of thought rather than accumulating one by one.
Uptake was slow and uneven. English language astrology carried on for centuries with Ptolemy's five, and the minor octiles stayed marginal in most practice. What changed their status was not a gradual consensus but one specific twentieth century lineage that put the 45 degree series at the center of its whole method.
The Hamburg School and the dial
Alfred Witte, working in Hamburg from the early 1920s, built a technique around a rotating dial rather than a drawn round chart. Positions were plotted on a disc marked out in a fraction of the circle and contacts were read as alignments along a pointer. Reinhold Ebertin came out of that lineage, removed the hypothetical bodies it had introduced, and published Kombination der Gestirneinflüsse in 1940, which appeared in English as The Combination of Stellar Influences. He called his own version cosmobiology.
The dial is what made the 45 degree series workable in practice. A 90 degree dial folds the wheel into four, so conjunction, square and opposition all land on the same mark, and the semi-square and the sesquiquadrate land together on a second mark 45 degrees along. A 45 degree dial folds it once more and brings all five onto a single line. What takes patience to find in an aspect grid becomes a straight visual alignment you can see at a glance.
In that school the semi-square is not treated as a minor aspect at all. It counts as a full hard contact, it is worked at orbs of roughly one degree, and it is used alongside midpoints rather than as a substitute for them. General practice does not go that far and there is no obligation to. It is still worth knowing that the aspect has a serious method behind it, one in which it carries as much weight as a square does elsewhere.
Reading a semi-square in an ordinary chart
Orb comes first. One to two degrees is the common ceiling outside cosmobiology. Anything wider stops being a distinct measurement, since 45 degrees sits between the 30 degree semisextile and the 60 degree sextile with only fifteen degrees of clearance on either side, and those two neighbors are read very differently.
On character, the usual report is irritation rather than collision. A square tends to describe two functions that run into each other and have to be settled somehow. A semi-square more often describes a rub that never rises to the level of a decision, the kind of thing a person may have stopped registering because it has always been part of the arrangement. Mars in semi-square to Saturn may show up as effort that keeps meeting small delays. Venus in semi-square to Uranus may show up as restlessness that never quite becomes a break. Both are tendencies rather than outcomes, and either could describe a great many different lives.
Weight and placement finish the judgment. The aspect earns real attention when it touches a personal point, and much less when it links two slow moving bodies, where the same contact belongs to a birth cohort rather than to a person. Houses tell you which parts of life the friction actually runs through. And a chart carrying several semi-squares with no hard major aspects is not a chart under heavy pressure. More often it is one where the pressure is spread thin and stays at a low level.
