What is a sesquiquadrate?
A sesquiquadrate is the 135 degree angle, one square plus one semi-square, which is precisely what the name says. Sesqui is Latin for one and a half, so the word means one and a half squares. It is a minor hard aspect kept on a narrow orb, and it belongs to the same series of angles that repeated halving of the circle produces.
One and a half squares, under four different names
Ninety plus forty five is 135, and 135 is three eighths of the circle, which is why a number of writers call this angle the trioctile. Others write sesquisquare, and some shorten it further to sesquare. Software labels are not standardized either, so the same contact can appear under different headings in two programs, and a chart that seems to have gained or lost an aspect has sometimes only changed vocabulary between one export and the next.
Measured on the short arc, 135 and 225 degrees describe the same aspect, since the wheel closes at 360 and any separation is counted the shorter way around. That is worth remembering when reading a raw table of separations. A program reporting 225 degrees between two planets and one reporting 135 are describing an identical geometry, not two different contacts.
Its neighbors deserve a moment as well. The trine sits fifteen degrees below at 120, and the quincunx fifteen degrees above at 150. With minor aspect orbs held at one or two degrees the ranges do not touch, and even a generous ten degree trine allowance stops five degrees short of 135. It arrived with Kepler and waited three centuries
This angle entered astrological literature in 1619, in Kepler's Harmonices Mundi, alongside the 45 degree semi-square and the quintile family. His case rested on inscribed regular figures rather than on which signs can behold one another, and the 135 degree distance follows from the octagon in the same way the 45 degree one does. Having been proposed, it then sat on the margin of practice for a very long time.
What eventually gave it a coherent home was harmonic astrology. John Addey, a British astrologer who spent years on statistical research with the Astrological Association, published Harmonics in Astrology in 1976. Multiply every longitude by eight, reduce the result back inside 360, and every eighth harmonic contact in the original chart shows up as a conjunction in the new one. Whether harmonic charts earn a place in your own practice is a separate question, and plenty of astrologers never use them.
Where it falls in a cycle
As a faster body separates from a slower one it passes 30, then 45, 60, 90, 120, 135, 150 and finally 180 degrees. That puts the sesquiquadrate after the trine and before the quincunx, making it the last hard angle on the outgoing side of the cycle and the first one encountered on the return. The ordering is the part people find counterintuitive. A stretch that reads as easy is followed by a narrow hard contact before the halfway point is reached.
In transit work that position is exactly what makes it worth noting. A slow planet crossing the 135 degree mark to a natal point is often the final measurable pressure before an opposition, so astrologers who track a full cycle rather than isolated hits tend to keep it on the list. Retrograde motion complicates the timing in the usual way, since an outer planet can cross the same 135 degree mark three separate times across the better part of a year before it finally moves on.
None of that says what will happen. It says when a particular angle is exact and how long the contact stays inside orb. The interpretation still has to come from which two bodies are involved and which houses they occupy, and the honest limit of the technique is that it locates a window rather than an event.
How much weight to give it
One to two degrees of orb, weight below every major aspect, and attention reserved for contacts that touch a personal point. That is the standard discipline for the minor octiles and it applies here without any modification. Between two slow bodies the same 135 degree gap belongs to a birth cohort rather than to an individual.
On character, what gets reported from a tight sesquiquadrate is usually pressure that arrives after something is already in motion. Where a square tends to show up as an obstacle at the outset, this angle more often shows up as an adjustment demanded partway through, small enough to absorb and persistent enough to keep noticing. Mercury in sesquiquadrate to Saturn may read as thinking that keeps having to be revised. Sun in sesquiquadrate to Neptune may read as a picture of oneself that will not hold still. Both are tendencies, open to many different lives.
One structural note to close on. Because 135 degrees is four and a half signs, the aspect lands sometimes four signs along and sometimes five, depending on the degrees involved.
