A name built from two Sanskrit words
Ayana means movement or passage. Amsha means a portion, a share of something larger. Put together they describe the slice of sky that has quietly accumulated between two ways of numbering the same circle. Every Vedic calculation reaches for that number first, because the sidereal positions cannot be found without it.
Around 285 CE the zero point of Aries and the spring equinox sat almost exactly on top of each other. The Ayanamsha at that moment was effectively nothing. Roughly 1700 years have passed since then, and across that stretch the two systems drifted apart. Precession is the cause, the slow tilt and turn of the Earth against the background stars.
Tropical astrology stayed loyal to the seasons. Aries opens with the March equinox no matter which constellation happens to sit behind the Sun. Sidereal astrology anchors its signs to fixed stars instead, to markers such as Spica. Both frameworks are internally consistent, so neither one is broken. They simply return different degrees for the same birth moment, and the size of that disagreement is the Ayanamsha.
How fast does the gap grow?
About 50.3 arcseconds a year. On any single birthday that is invisible. Stack it up and roughly 71 years buy one whole degree, while a full circuit of 360 degrees takes close to 25,772 years, the span sometimes called the Platonic year.
Current values run between 23 and 25 degrees depending on which system you pick. A shift of that size is enough to move a person from tropical Virgo into sidereal Leo. Anyone born in the last few degrees of a sign notices the change most, since those degrees sit right on the border where the two counts disagree. Somebody born in the middle of a sign often keeps the same sign name in both systems.
Hipparchus is usually credited with the first recorded notice of precession, drawn from comparing his own observations against older Babylonian records. Raman proposes a slightly smaller value. The KP system, short for Krishnamurti Paddhati, runs its own calculation and turns up most often in work focused on event timing.
Differences between these systems rarely exceed half a degree. That margin still decides the outcome for a planet resting at the very edge of a sign, which can land in a different rasi depending on the choice. Before drawing firm conclusions from a Vedic reading, it is worth knowing which Ayanamsha the software actually applied.
Why Spica became the anchor
The Lahiri system holds Spica fixed at exactly 180 degrees, meaning 0 degrees of Libra. Spica is the ruling star of Chitra nakshatra, one of the 27 lunar mansions the sidereal zodiac is divided into. Fixed stars barely shift across a human lifetime, unlike the vernal point, which keeps sliding backward. A stable marker makes accumulated precession far easier to measure against.
That anchoring is the whole wager of the sidereal zodiac, that a sign should correspond to an actual region of stars rather than to a quarter of the solar year. Tropical astrology never made that promise. There the sign is the season itself, and no star needs to stand behind it for the system to work.

Does choosing an Ayanamsha other than Lahiri change the result much?
