What Cancer shows in a birth chart

The fourth segment, counted from the equinox point

Cancer names a stretch of the ecliptic and nothing more than that. Counting forward from the March equinox point, it is the fourth thirty degree division and runs from ninety to one hundred and twenty degrees. Its opening degree is the June solstice, the moment the Sun reaches its furthest northern position. So the sign has a physical anchor in the sky rather than a symbolic one. It is a measured band. No planet needs to be inside it for the band to exist.

The Sun crosses Cancer from about June 21 to about July 22. Both of those dates are approximations that shift. A tropical year is roughly a quarter of a day longer than a calendar year of 365 days. The words describe fit. Mars prefers direct action and Cancer works by indirect approach, so the two methods disagree and the planet has to adapt.

The opposite sign is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, and the two form a single axis across a chart. That axis is usually read as private ground against public position, and experienced readers treat it as one topic rather than two. Note what this does not mean. An axis between signs says nothing about how two people will get along. Compatibility is synastry work and needs two complete charts, so no claim of that kind can be made from one sign alone.

Where the sign shows up in a real chart

The point occupying Cancer matters more than the word Cancer. The Sun there describes the central direction of a life. A Cancer Ascendant is a different order of statement. The rising sign is calculated from the exact minute and place of birth, so a birthday alone cannot produce it. When Cancer rises, the Moon becomes the chart ruler and the whole chart is read through its condition, including its phase and its house. That is structural rather than descriptive. A house cusp in Cancer is a further case. It says the affairs of that house are handled with Cancer material, whether or not a planet sits inside.

An empty Cancer is ordinary and carries no warning. Most charts leave several signs unoccupied, and the material still reaches the chart through the Moon and through the house holding the cusp. A crowded Cancer concentrates attention, and three or more bodies in one sign is what astrologers call a stellium. None of this forecasts an event, names a medical condition or fixes a result.
