What is Mars retrograde?

Mars reverses its apparent direction through the zodiac roughly every 26 months and holds the reversal for two to two and a half months. The timing is not arbitrary. A Mars retrograde always brackets the moment Mars stands opposite the Sun, which is also the moment it comes closest to Earth and burns brightest in the night sky. The loop that broke the circle

For close to two thousand years the Mars loop was the problem nobody could solve cleanly. Every model of the heavens had to explain why this particular planet slowed, stopped, backed up through a shallow arc and then carried on, and every model had to force extra machinery into the geometry to make the numbers behave. Ptolemy handled it with an equant point, a device that saved the appearances while quietly abandoning the principle of uniform circular motion it was supposed to defend.

Tycho Brahe then spent two decades measuring planetary positions to within a couple of arcminutes, better than anyone managed before the telescope. When Johannes Kepler inherited that data he was assigned Mars, and Mars happens to have the most eccentric orbit of the classical set. Eight arcminutes of error in his best circular model refused to disappear. Kepler took those eight arcminutes seriously instead of rounding them away, and the ellipse came out of it. Astronomia Nova, published in 1609, is in large part a book about the Mars retrograde loop.

Astrologers kept the loop for a different reason. Whatever the physical cause, from where we stand the planet does slow, stop and reverse, and the sky as seen from here is what chart reading has always described. Knowing that the loop is an artifact of two orbits passing does not remove it from the ephemeris or from the calendar.

Why one retrograde runs 60 days and the next runs 80

Mars reversals are not all the same length, and the spread is wide enough to notice. The shortest run about 60 days, the longest closer to 80. The cause is the eccentricity of the Mars orbit. When the opposition falls near Mars perihelion, the planet is close to us and moving quickly, so it clears the loop fast. When the opposition falls near aphelion, Mars is distant and slow, and the reversal stretches out.

Recent cycles show the range clearly. The 2018 retrograde ran from late June to late August, a little over 60 days, with Mars at its brightest in fifteen years. The 2022 to 2023 retrograde in Gemini lasted about 74 days. The one that opened in December 2024 ran close to 79 days and carried Mars back out of Leo into Cancer, which meant the review changed sign partway through.

That last detail matters more than the day count. A reversal contained inside one sign keeps a single theme from station to station. One that crosses a sign boundary going backward hands the second half of the period to a different register, and the two halves rarely feel alike to the person living through them.

Two and a half months is a different creature from three weeks

Comparing it with Mercury is the quickest way to feel the difference. A Mercury retrograde is three weeks long and it works on the surface of things: messages, schedules, small machinery. A Mars retrograde is two to three times longer and it works on drive, timing and the way effort gets aimed. Nothing about it is quick, and treating it as a longer Mercury cycle misses what is going on.

Mars is the planet of initiative, so the reversal is read as initiative turned inward. Projects that were being pushed forward tend to want rethinking rather than more push. Energy can feel less available for launching and more available for revising what already exists. The traditional advice against opening a campaign under a Mars retrograde comes out of military astrology, where the recorded observation was that a retrograde start rarely held its momentum. Take that as a note about momentum rather than as a ban.

Friction is the honest part of the description. A planet whose entire nature is forward motion, apparently going backward, reads as effort meeting resistance. What no chart can say is where that resistance leads. It names the axis under pressure and how much pressure there is. The outcome stays with the person and the situation, and a reading that tells you otherwise has added something the transit does not contain.

Born with Mars retrograde

Mars is retrograde about 9 percent of the time, so close to one chart in eleven carries it natally. That makes it more common than a natal Venus retrograde and rarer than a natal Mercury one, which puts the placement in a middle band where most people have met a few examples without noticing the pattern.

The usual reading is that assertion runs on a slower and more internal circuit. Anger may be recognized well after the moment that caused it. Effort may build quietly for a long stretch and then arrive all at once. Many people with the placement describe a gap between feeling provoked and being able to act on it, and describe narrowing that gap as a project of their twenties and thirties rather than something that came free.

As with any natal retrograde, sign and house carry most of the information. A reversed Mars in Capricorn in the tenth house is a different working style from a reversed Mars in Pisces in the fourth, and flattening both into one description helps nobody. The same softening effect shows up here too. Transiting Mars retrogrades tend to feel less foreign to someone born with the planet already reversed, because that inward routing is their default rather than an interruption of it.
