What is Venus retrograde?

Venus appears to reverse her course through the zodiac about once every 18 to 19 months, and each stretch lasts somewhere near 40 days. Among the personal planets that makes it the least frequent reversal of the set, far rarer than Mercury and shorter than Mars. It happens as Venus slips between the Earth and the Sun, the same passage that turns her from an evening star into a morning one. Five loops, eight years, and a shape drawn by arithmetic

Venus completes an orbit in 224.7 days. Earth takes 365.25. Line those two numbers up and something tidy falls out. Thirteen Venus orbits come to about 2,921 days, while eight Earth years come to 2,922. Astronomers call that near match a resonance, and it governs everything about how these retrogrades repeat.

The practical result is that Venus stages five reversals in eight years, after which the pattern begins again within a couple of degrees of where it started. Mark each reversal point on a circle of the zodiac and the five positions fall roughly 72 degrees apart, so the figure closes into a five pointed star. Older texts called it the rose of Venus. There is no hidden meaning in the shape. It is the ratio of two orbital periods and nothing more, and the single day of slippage per cycle is why the whole pattern drifts slowly backward across centuries.

For a chart reader the arithmetic has a plain use. If you know when the last Venus retrograde fell in your chart, you have a fair idea of which part of the zodiac the next one will cover, and you know that in eight years the same band of degrees comes round again. The retrograde of July and August 2023 ran through Leo. Eight years on, the reversal returns to nearly that same stretch of sky.

What the oldest planetary record was actually tracking

The Venus tablet of Ammisaduqa is a cuneiform document from the first Babylonian dynasty, copied and recopied for more than a thousand years afterward. It lists the dates on which Venus first became visible and last remained visible, morning by morning and evening by evening, across a run of 21 years. It is the oldest surviving record of any planet, and what it preserves is the retrograde cycle as seen from the ground.

From here the sequence goes like this. Venus shines in the west after sunset for months, brightens, then sinks toward the Sun and disappears. She is gone for about eight days. Then she rises in the east before dawn and the long stretch of visibility begins again on the other side of the sky. That short disappearance sits at the middle of the retrograde, at the moment Venus passes between us and the Sun. The reversal and the changeover from evening star to morning star are one event described two ways.

One thing is worth separating out, because it looks similar and is not. Venus also vanishes when she passes behind the Sun, and that absence runs closer to 50 days. She is moving direct through all of it. Only the short disappearance belongs to the retrograde, which is why the tradition treats the two conjunctions with the Sun as different in character rather than as the same event repeated.

Roughly one birth in fourteen

Venus spends around 7 percent of the time retrograde. Out of every hundred charts, seven or eight will show her already reversed at the moment of birth. That is uncommon enough to be worth naming and common enough that you almost certainly know several people who have it.

A natal Venus retrograde is usually read as a more private register around affection and worth. Not less feeling, a slower route to putting it outside. People with the placement often say they knew what they liked long before they could explain why, or that their taste took years to sound like their own rather than borrowed. Sign and house carry more information than the retrograde flag on its own, so a reversed Venus in the fifth house and one in the eighth read very differently.

There is a knock on effect worth knowing about. When a Venus retrograde transit comes round, people born with the placement tend to find it less disorienting than everyone else does, much as a natal Mercury retrograde takes the strangeness out of the Mercury cycles. The rhythm is already familiar. For the other 93 percent the 40 days can feel like an unusual pause in an area of life that normally runs on instinct.

What comes under review, and what nobody can promise

Venus governs relating, taste and the sense of what something is worth. A retrograde is read as a review of those three, not as a verdict on them. Old preferences get questioned. A value absorbed early and never examined may come up for inspection. Large purchases made on impulse in that window are the classic caution, and the reasoning behind it is ordinary rather than occult. A period that unsettles your sense of worth is a poor time to lock in a judgment about worth.

The tradition also advises care about formalizing something in the relationship area during the reversal. Care, not prohibition. Plenty of people have married under a Venus retrograde and plenty of those marriages held. What the cycle points to is pressure along the Venus axis and how strong that pressure is. The direction any particular story takes belongs to the people in it rather than to the transit, and anyone telling you what will happen to your relationship over those 40 days is reading well beyond what the sky supports.

The most useful question during the stretch is a small one. Which house of your chart is Venus crossing, and which natal planet does she pass back over on the way? A reversal that runs across the natal Moon touches a different nerve than one confined to an empty sixth house, and that difference is what decides whether the weeks feel loud or barely register at all.
