That threshold is a choice rather than a natural boundary. Different people apply it slightly differently, so published supermoon counts vary between three and four a year. The threshold was set by hand.

Astronomy already had a name for the alignment. Syzygy describes the Sun, Earth and Moon lying in a straight line, which is what happens at every new and full Moon. Add perigee and you get perigee syzygy, which is precise, unglamorous and almost never printed in a headline. The astronomical community mostly treats supermoon as a popular label rather than a technical one. Nobody is hiding anything by using it. Nolle attached a further idea to his coinage. He suggested that these alignments correlate with geophysical stress, meaning earthquakes, volcanic activity and severe storms. That claim has been examined by seismologists more than once and it has not held up. Large earthquakes do not cluster around perigee syzygy in any way the data supports. Saying so is not hostility towards astrology. It is simply where the evidence sits. Astrology loses nothing by saying so.

The same applies to the other popular attachments. Hospital birth rates do not rise on supermoon nights, and studies looking for a lunar effect on emergency admissions or on behavior have repeatedly come back empty. Sleep research is more interesting and still unsettled, with a few small studies reporting slightly shorter sleep around the full Moon and others finding nothing. Whatever that turns out to be, it is a full Moon question rather than a supermoon one. Distance does not enter into it.

One physical effect is genuinely real and worth stating. Tides are marginally higher when a new or full Moon coincides with perigee, and coastal agencies do take note of the dates. The difference is measured in centimeters, not in disasters. It matters if you live where flooding is already borderline. It changes nothing for the rest of us. Coastal warnings are the practical end of the story, and they are issued on tide tables rather than on headlines.

What it means in a chart

Astrologically a supermoon is a full Moon or a new Moon. Nothing in the technique changes because the distance is shorter. The chart is cast the same way, the degree matters the same way and the house it falls in carries the same weight it always did. Anyone reading a supermoon as a categorically different event is adding something the tradition never contained, since the term is younger than most working astrologers.

Some modern practitioners do treat proximity as intensity, on the reasonable enough argument that a closer body feels closer. That is an interpretive choice and it should be labeled as one. Older texts have nothing to say about it, because perigee distances were not part of the toolkit when the aspect rules were written. Use the idea if it works for you. Do not present it as established doctrine. Label the newer idea clearly.

The practical value is smaller and more honest. A supermoon gets publicity, and publicity gets people outside looking at the sky. If that prompts you to check which house the lunation falls in and what it touches in your chart, the label has done something useful. The Moon will look much as it always does.
